Backpacking with Baby

Now that my son is too heavy for a front carrier and isn't walking just yet, we need another way to carry him around. The stroller is great for walking around the neighborhood but sometimes I need something that allows me to maneuver in smaller places and also handle my almost 3 year old daughter. Enter the backpack!... We waited too long to introduce it to our daughter. She was walking already and lost all interest in a stroller or backpack. My son was first put in it around 6 months old and now at 10 months old, we use it almost daily. When researching which backpack to buy, I did a lot of internet searching and also asked friends. I ended up with the Phil and Ted's Escape backpack which is serving us well. One of the features I was looking for was a sun cover. We would have been fine with their Metro backpack but it doesn't have a sun cover. Both are excellent choices with great detail (changing pads, pockets, day backpack, neck roll, etc). Their web site www.philandteds.com details all of their backpacks features. Once you understand the features of any backpack and figure out the best way to use it (I keep mine in my car at all times and use the hatch area to put my son in the pack and then get my daughter out of her seat) you will come to love it as much as we do! My son loves it too....he plays with my hair and pats me on my head as we travel around local farms, downtown stores and on the beach.

My first born was not a sling/carrier baby - he just wasn't into it. But my 2nd liked being in a sling, swaddle, wrap etc. - so I had a variety of slings and wraps (Moby, Maya, Kangaroo pouch, Ergo etc.), and as he got older backpacks. In addition to the backpack style as you mention above we also have an Ergo http://www.ergobabycarriers.com/babycarriers/category/carrier/ which can be used for different ages and has a backpack position. In addition to using it outdoors and on outings, my son (now 19 months) even likes to be in the backpack or Ergo inside the house sometimes if I'm cleaning up etc. The ergo is lightweight and relatively compact (compared to a larger backpack) so it's just right for certain outings when I don't want to carry the larger/"heavier" (even though our frame pack isn't even that heavy) one. I get tons of comments on it when I'm out and about with him (I also got lots of comments when I used the Moby!).
