Highlights High Five Magazine-a great tool for kids

Highlights CatalogI have always loved getting mail and noticed that my 2 1/2 year old enjoys this daily activity too. Problem was, there was never anything for her to enjoy. Now, we have decided to get a subscription to Highlights Magazine's newest addition, High Five. It is a magazine published monthly dedicated to the early years of childhood. Its goal is to encourage a natural sense of wonder of the world, promote reasoning, problem solving and vocabulary and to inspire them to be kind, get along with others and be self confident. That's a lot for a magazine to do!

We have enjoyed the 3 issues that have come. Parts are too advanced for my 2 1/2 year old but I can spin them into activities she understands or skip them altogether. There are stories we can read at bed time, activities we can do together (recently we learned about matching and then turned it into a memory game). All in all, I recommend the magazine. Check out their web site at http://Highlights.com where you can get a taste of the magazine and sign up for a subscription.

Just as I finish writing about Highlights Magazine, I received an offer for National Geographic for little kids. I will have to check it out and see if it is appropriate for my 3 year old. Stay tuned....

We like Little Kids and B enjoys the Kids magazine even though it is a little commercial. He kept asking us what food Jack Black would miss most if he was a panda. As my father used to say, it doesn't matter what they read, as long as they're reading. As I write this B is in his room pouring over the new Pokemon book. Here is a link to a post I wrote earlier about our favorite magazines: Magazines - a great gift that lasts all year.
