The burpee - a quick and classic exercise for getting back into shape

The burpee is a classic exercise that works your whole body. It does not require a lot of space or time so it's great for those of us who want something quick and effective. There are several versions of the burpee but my favorite is the following...

  1. Start in a standing position.
  2. Reach down into a squat (ankles touch the backs of the thighs) with your hands to the outside of your feet.
  3. Jump or step back into plank position (straight arms and straight back - the top of a push-up).
  4. Do one push-up or hold the plank position.
  5. Jump or step back into a squat.
  6. Stand up, reach towards the ceiling, and repeat.

Do as many as you can and then rest and do a few more. Any number of these works multiple muscles throughout your body including your abs, legs, and arms. If you want, you can add jumps, sit-ups, and other stretches into the routine.

[Common sense warning - do not start new exercise programs without your doctor's consent, especially if abdominal exercises are not advised.]
