Halloween tipsSubmitted by WestCoastMom on October 31, 2007 - 07:42.
Happy Halloween. Here are a few tips we use to make the evening enjoyable. We always plan a very simple dinner for Halloween night since the kids are usually too excited to sit and eat for very long. Tonight we are having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with cut carrots. It's something we can also eat in the car on the way home from school (at 5:45 pm). I usually find one of my children wants to trick or treat longer than the other so I do small circles around the neighborhood. That way I can drop off a child to help hand out candy with his dad while the other continues to run around... I make a big deal about the helping hand out candy so the overtired one gets excited to have a job. Later we lay out all the candy and sort it (my kids like to sort). We talk about how much it is and trade candy with each other. Everyone choses a few pieces to eat. Then we decide what candy is going to be traded for money. Laying out the candy is almost as much fun as collecting it and adding up how much it's "worth" adds to the excitement. Afterwards we spend a little free time playing to calm down followed by a super brushing teeth session and a quick book. Then I lay out clothes for the next day and make lunches. I find it helps to treat the day after Halloween as a holiday too so I don't expect too much. November 1st is a good day if there are fewer than three yelling / crying fits. I also try to continue with very simple meals (pasta with sauce and fruit salad) with lots of milk and water to help everyone recover. We hope you have a great Halloween!!
