Tooth brushing challenges and successes!

When I first became pregnant I wondered about logistics non stop. I think that was because I was an event planner and that is what I did best. Now I realize, looking back, that those logistics have helped me and my 2 year old daughter tackle some otherwise difficult events like tooth brushing. From the day she was born, A always came in the bathroom with me when I was showering and getting ready for my day. She saw me do all of the little things that need to be done particularly brushing my teeth. So when it became time for A's teeth to be brushed (I wasn't one of the Mom's who brushed their gums before teeth...maybe next time), she understood why my hand was in her mouth and wanted to try it herself.

I started with the rubber finger brusher and still have success with that when she is extra fussy and I know I need to get some of that plaque off (just be careful because she has bitten down on my finger). Then, I moved to a small baby tooth brush with the non fluoride tooth paste and that worked most times. I also tried the electric tooth brush which she likes. I let her choose each night which tooth brush she wants and let her brush until she hands it back to me and then I do a little game of "does this tickle" with it so I can get those unreached teeth. I think because she sees me brush my teeth, she wants to do it too. The same thing happened when her hair got too long to just let air dry after her bath and Daddy started rubbing it dry with a towel. She didn't like that until I showed her that I too need to dry my hair...then it was OK. I have already seen it taking shape with the potty. Kids love to imitate and as much as we would all like a quiet shower, having A in there with me has paid off.

I'm so jealous you started brushing early and continued. I have to admit that I haven't been great with getting my kids to brush their teeth even though it was something I was planning to do better with our second. Brushing often gets dropped as we rush off in the morning. Recently, however, I've noticed that my kids' breath smells. It doesn't smell all the time but they both have colds and it took me by surprise. Plus, now that B is in kindergarten, we see more older kids with cavities.

My one exciting bit of toothbrushing progress is that both kids can now swish and spit - into the sink. B uses a fluoride toothpaste and N uses a non-fluoride paste four to five days a week. I think they will be able to use the same toothpaste soon.

I noticed some breath issues too. I wasn't sure if it was a cold or not but it was certainly incentive to brush more and more efficiently. Mornings are hard because at A's young age we can dress her downstairs and forget all about the brushing routine. Since school is new for us I am trying to figure out a morning routine that includes all of the necessary things (being 9 months pregnant doesn't make me want to climb stairs to brush teeth). Cavities at such a young age scare me so I try to remember that when we have one foot out the door and unbrushed teeth. Congrats on the spitting...that's a big deal and not easy (just ask my husband).
