Plastic scare-email hoax

Submitted by EastCoastMom on August 27, 2007 - 17:24.

Over the past month I have received several emails from friends/colleagues who have received emails regarding the safety of heating and cooling plastic and polycarbonate plastic baby bottles. One email in particular was said to come from Johns Hopkins University and said "Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic...." I went onto the JHU cancer web site (www.hopkinskimmelcancercenter.org) and right there on their front page was the heading, "email hoax regarding cancer". I clicked on it and learned a lot about the hoax email and the truth about Dioxins (they are not even present in plastic), freezing plastic bottles and heating plastic. Check out the site and check out the article, it is very revealing. I also contacted the makers of Dr Brown's bottles (Handi-Craft) and asked them to respond to the resent influx of emails about polycarbonate plastic baby bottles. I received an email from a Scott Rhodes saying in part, "The Dr. Brown bottles are made of polycarbonate plastic. It is my hope that (the articles I attached) will shed some light on this subject for you.....Hopefully you will come to the conclusion that this anti-Polycarbonate issue has no merit". The articles he suggested I review are attached-please take a moment and review the JHU cancer site article and the attached and come to the conclusion you feel most comfortable with. My husband and I decided that while we will buy all new bottles for our next baby, we will not stop using the Dr Brown bottles. We do not heat our food in plastic containers nor do we use plastic wrap over food when we do heat them. I found the information comforting and I hope it helps all of you too.
