Holiday cards and stories

Shutterfly.com

One of the highlights for me this year in the card giving area is the ability to make collage cards from Shutterfly.com. We have a hard time getting a picture of the whole family so it's nice to be able to include separate pictures of the boys doing things they like to do - smiling as a family apparently isn't a highlight for them...

I've also started including stories from the boys in our holiday letter - they take up space and are often much more humorous than something I could write. Here's N's favorite, "Once upon a time there was a truck carrying a broken track. The End.” We went through about a week where he told his story several times a day in the car.

Here's the one he came up with when I was writing our holiday letter. N’s story: “I’m going to tell you, once upon a time a fire truck carried a firefighter to a fire and gets out the hose and connects to the fire hydrant and sprays like this spssssss spsssss and they get out of the house. Here’s a screwdriver (holding a screwdriver) here’s the other screwdriver (holding another smaller screwdriver). And the hook and ladder truck comes and the pumper truck brings out all the hoses. Here’s another screwdriver. It fell down (as he drops one of the screwdrivers). Then the fire truck driver goes back to the fire station and he hangs all the tools up on the hooks in the fire station and he goes to sleep. Then the firefighter wakes up and goes to the next fire.”

And here's B's story from yesterday after getting a book from a friend about magical beasts: "I’m going to do a scary one about knights fighting stuff. Once there was a palace with princess, kings, and queens and knights ruled outside and there were lots of archers. Because they lived in the land of magical monsters and unicorns. There were lots of unicorns and griffins, and wolves, and dragons, and trolls, and lots of fairies and stuff like that. And they always ran up to the walls trying to get the princesses. That’s because the princess had lots of precious jewels and they wanted the jewels. So they forced the unicorns to go and get the princess and get the jewels and come back and give them to the monsters. And soon all the monsters were yelling at the gods to get a sea monster. And the gods were trying to make something that would force the sea monster to go and get the jewels and take them back across the sea and ocean. And tear the city up because they lived on the other side. That was their place. And now it was called the city of ruins. They’ve tried to get the jewels back but it’s no good because they guard their caves or their lairs where the jewels are. And they each have a unicorn to charge them if they got in. And there were two dragons, one wolf, one griffin, and a big angry troll.”

Happy Holidays!

Have you tried Picaboo?

http://www.picaboo.com/

In the past, I've used kodak, shutterfly, snapfish etc. But heard about Picaboo and am really enjoying it. It's got more capabilities than the others (which can be good, and bad). I got into a holiday gift creation (a photo album) that I ended up spending way too much time on! One of things we figured out is you can use a piece of a picture and match that color to make the background for the picture (a color off a shirt etc.). You copy the color, create a jpg and then drop it into the background. So then I became obsessed with doing it for each page. It turned out really nice, but I spent way too much time on it getting sucked into Picaboo capabilities!

Check it out sometime.

I spend way too much time on our yearly photo albums but I also love them. This past year I spent less time on the text because Shutterfly had background options. I have a friend who keeps scrapbooks for her kids (all three of them) and she keeps herself sane by just writing whenever she wants whatever she wants. She doesn't try to use the same pen, or the same angle, or spell check, etc. I realized that I could create photo books and then write more in them later if I wanted to. It's fun to annotate the books with things the kids say as they look at the pictures. Picaboo looks great but it's only available for PCs, which is probably a good thing for me because I'd also spend way too much time on the backgrounds...
