April 2-8, 2006 is the Week of the Young Child (WOYC). This year's theme is "Building Better Futures for All Children". During the WOYC our preschool celebrates with activities each day. Even if you don't participate in a program that celebrates WOYC, there is still lots you can do...

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association...The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life...

NAEYC provides a list of suggested activities for the week that cover areas of Raising Public Awareness, Public Policy and Advocacy, Reading and Writing, Violence Prevention, and Child Health. Our school's activities focus on celebrating the children and the teachers. The parents are invited to help throughout the week while the kids enjoy a picnic lunch, a whole day of reading (Please Read to Me Day - B brought books about dinosaurs and his brother brought books about trucks - see below), and a puppet show. Later this week we're preparing a lunch for the teachers and bringing in fruit to make fruit baskets for the teachers to have over the weekend.

Here are a few other links to ideas for celebrating the WOYC.

Thank you to everyone out there who teachs or advocates for our children!! I'm very grateful to have quality programs available in our community. Stayed tuned for WOYC 2007 - April 22-28, 2007.

High Maintenance Mom is celebrating WOYC with a monthly giveaway and items of the month (see upper right panel) related to letters and reading.

Here are the books my kids chose for Please Read to Me Day.
