High Maintenance Mom

"No More Pacifier" is one of four new personalized books from Change is Strange. The series was created to help children deal with change in their lives and includes stories about going to school, having a baby, and having mommy and daddy leave on a trip. In "No More Pacifier" the mommy and daddy decide it's time for their daughter to give up her pacifier. They help her create a special box for it when she is not sleeping and she stops using it at her own pace...

When we realized B had become addicted to his pacifier I looked for a book to help us and couldn't find one. I wish "No More Pacifier" had been an option (see Saying goodbye to the binky). "No More Pacifier" gives examples of why the parents wanted to get rid of the binky, which were familiar to me but would have been good for B to also hear from a book -- worrying about whether it is bad for teeth, not being able to understand what your child is saying when they talk with it in their mouth, making sure you can always find one, etc. I also liked how the story showed the mom and daughter creating a special box for the pacifier and talking about when the box should be used.

When I read the book to B, I was afraid he would want his pacifier back. Instead he told me how it was hard for him when he had to give it up. I realized that we hadn't talked about it for a long time and he was proud that he didn't need it anymore. As we read the story over and over we started to talk about other changes in his life making the book useful well beyond its initial purpose.

"No More Pacifier" and the other Change is Strange books are available in a standard version or a personalized version. The personalized version really looks like the book was made just for your child. Many other personalized books look cheap because the fonts, colors, and sizes of the name don't match those in the story.
