Mommy, what would happen if...

I was tired yesterday and that made answering some of the same questions over and over even more difficult. "Mommy, what would the small airport people say if a big plane tried to land at their small airport?" We've been discussing plane and airport size for about a week and I blame The Pocket Physicist for starting it by pointing out a small airport on one of his drives...

After discussing runway lengths and plane capacities for about five minutes, I decided to turn it into a story. Previously, I had been trying to stay calm by reminding myself that B really just wants to talk with me and that asking the same question over and over is a way for him to have a conversation. Unfortunately, he doesn't really want to talk about all the things I want to talk about. So after his next, "what would happen if..." question we started our story.

Me: One day we went to see a big airport and...
B: We saw a really big plane. The biggest plane ever.
Me: What else did we see?
B: Big planes that weren't as big as the really big plane.
Me: Oh, so we saw other big planes...

I understand that I have two boys and will need to brush up on my "boy" stuff because there are now lots of questions for which I have no good answer.

B: How big is a sperm whale?
Me: I really don't know. We could look it up later.
B: Daddy's smarter than you because he knows how big a sperm whale and black bear are.
Me: Hmmm.

I would like to point out that prior to having kids I really believed that boys did "boy things" because that's what was presented to them. B and Little Grab both attend daycare with lots of dolls, dress-up clothes, and art activities. Here was a conversation with a few girls I overheard earlier in the year.

A: Let's play princess.
C: I want to be Belle.
A: I'm Snow White.
B: I'm the frog!

It appears that, for now, I will get to be the princess. Maybe one day I'll be the princess who knows the approximate weights of B's favorite animals.

Heh. Cathy had the same thing. She thought that 'girl stuff' and 'boy stuff' was culturally determined. Until we had a girl and saw her drawn like a moth to a flame by pink, princess, etc.
