Removal of tab from First Years sippy cups

Last month I was searching for the First Years Take & Toss sippy cups and containers to replace those we had lost or destroyed. It was very difficult to find ones with the tabs I could open as I commented in Finding lunch and snack containers you can open. At that time I also sent a note to The First Years asking if I could purchase more containers with the tabs. I just received their reply...

The First Years Take & Toss Spill-Proof Cups are some of our most popular cups. Recently they were updated to remove the small tab on the lids of the cups. The tabs were removed to prevent older children from taking the lids off the cups and spilling the liquid out of the cup.

We suggest if you are having a hard time taking the lid off of the cup, gently squeeze the cup and this will allow you to grip the lid with your fingers.

How old is an "older child"? When did it stop being okay to learn how to open your cup? And how long will we need to open containers for my kids so they can eat their lunch? It appears that our kids need tutoring so they have better scissor skills before kindergarten but it's in our best interest to prevent them from learning how to open their lunch containers. Also -- won't flexing the cup make it wear out faster?

So, I'm on the lookout for a simple lunch container my kids can learn to open on their own that will fit in the lunch box.

I also have some old containers with tabs and new ones without tabs. I threw away the lids without the tabs because I can't open them. What a pain! Maybe more of us should complain.

I bought a set of the Especially for Baby containers from Toys R Us. They come in a set of four and the larger three all have lids with a snap top for accessing half of the food. When I showed them to B he got so excited that he wouldn't have to ask for help with his lunch. I felt pretty lame not buying new containers earlier. I hope they work...

I'm getting rid of (donating) the smallest Especially for Baby containers because they are really hard to open. The Sassy ones are more expensive (about $3.50 instead of $1.50) but B can access food in all three of them, even the ones without the flip lid. Unfortunately, they are harder to fit in the lunchbox.
